According to Appendix A of the CCSS, “all students must be able to comprehend texts of steadily increasing complexity as they progress through school. By the time they complete the core, students must be able to read and comprehend 1 independently and proficiently the kinds of complex texts commonly found in college and careers” (p. 2). Suggestions for books at all levels of text complexity Interest levels ATOS Renaissance Learning estimates text complexity 2 using both the ATOS Readability Formula and 3 ATOS, which has been found Interest Level (IL). to be a reliable and valid quantitative indicator Determined by Quantitative 4 gauges the difficulty level of of text complexity, teacher and student the text in a book; however, qualitative factors Qualitative (e.g., the maturity level of the book’s content and Reader and Task themes—i.e., IL) and reader and task considerations (e.g., a student’s motivation, Text Complexity Model, Appendix A, CCSS for English Language Arts, background knowledge, and purpose for reading) © 2010, NGA/CCSSO must also be considered during book selection.
