1 Who I Am Home Group Study Resource Leigh Elsmore Week 27 Preacher: 1 Read: John 2 I am so grateful that John included an extra chapter in the book of John. It sounded like John was going to wrap up the entire book at John 20 but we see he add an extra 25 verses, making Chapter 21. These verses reveal the character of Jesus, His forgiving and compassionate heart. We find in Ch 21, 7 disciples on the Sea of Galilee fishing. They had gone back to what they knew how to do, fishing. Perhaps Peter had felt like he had let Jesus down by denying Him, He may have felt disqualified and rejected from Jesus. We know that Jesus never rejects us and wants to communicate to us daily. He can do this in a number of ways e.g. through His word; through scripture; through nature; through people; through music and through His Holy Spirit. It would have been a hard night because we know that they did not catch a thing. Jesus was standing on the shore and called to them “have you any fish” to which they responded ‘No’. Interestingly, John records Jesus standing on the beach and none of them recognise Him. They have previously been with Him everyday for 3 years and yet they did not recognise Him. Jesus instructs them to throw the nets on the other side of the boat and...the net loaded up with fish, 153 to be exact! How good is this! What a miracle! Peter and the other disciples head to shore only to find Jesus there with a fire burning with fish and fresh bread. He invites them to stay and have breakfast. Ancient tradition is when someone wrongs you but you invite them to a meal, this is a sign of forgiveness. This is good news to Peter who only days earlier denied Jesus. We see the story close with Peter reinstated and forgiven by Jesus. He is then told three times to go and tend to Jesus’ sheep which we know are people. Belief in Jesus isn’t just something we say, it is something we do, it’s an action, in fact... it is living! Questions: 1. What did you take out of the talk this week at church? 2. Have you ever felt like there is a time in your life where you have rejected Jesus. Can you describe how this unfolded? How do you come to realise that Jesus forgave you for this? 3. What are some ways you connect with and hear/sense Jesus talking to you? 4. Have you ever been in a situation and felt like Jesus was not there with you? Describe this. 5. On closer inspection we know that Jesus does not leave us. How does this make you feel? 6. Spiritual is so much for important than the physical, but caring for the physical can prepare the way for spiritual ministry. Discuss this idea and see if your group can come up with a way to implement this?
